Quick Update

Yes! Starburst has been contracted by Secret Cravings Publishing. How cool! That is the final Novel of the Warriors of the Elector Trilogy. Just leaving Star of Eternity to be written.

In other news, Star of the Fleet has been held up due to some external issues. I'm hoping to hear soon about a new date for release. As soon as I know, I'll be sharing!

Holidays...

I love holidays. Alas hubby and I don't get away as much as we would like to. I think it's got a lot to do with his job, my business, writing and teenage daughters in their last few years of high school.

Our last holiday was in June 2011 - right after the horrible Queensland Floods and I can't say I enjoyed the lead up to it. Remember that danged volcano that kept erupting and closing the airports in Australia? Yeah... my hubby was stuck in Canberra, only arriving home 6 hours before we had to leave to get to the airport to fly to Tasmania.

We also had a visitor traveling with us. It was nice... but this time we have decided on a cruise. Something with no phones, no internet. Just the four of us, communing and sharing experiences. Something that we don't get many opportunities for. But before we go to that, it's SupaNova in Brisbane. Actually, this was a real bone of contention, because we were not going to miss that. For anything, including our long awaited holiday. In the end, we have transferred our cruise booking to different dates so we can go.

Sad, isn't it? Lol!

So today, I'm asking your opinion. There are four of us. One daughter is considering Sailor Moon as her muse, one isn't sure. And as for hubs and I? Well I suggested Mama Bobchik and no-one knew who she was.

Suggestions for quick and easy throw together costumes would be great about now.

Winners are announced

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the Scavenger Hunt.

The winners are as follows (drum roll please!)

The Imogene Nix winner is Yvette! Emails have been sent.

Secret Cravings Grand Prize Winners are:
Grand prize- Julianne Keller
First place- Lisa George
Second place- Holly Abbie

Congrats to all that attended, participated and entered

When all things come to an end...the cycle starts again.

Today is both a sad and happy day in our house. Sad because we lost another guinea pig. Rose, our last female passed on today. It's never easy. No matter how old you are. Mind you, a sobbing daughter usually makes you feel worse. :( (Even though I am actually allergic to the guinea pigs, they are cute to have around...but once Chubs passes on, we won't have anymore because our daughters will be leaving school soon and with that moving away to live their own lives.)

On a brighter note, the cycle of life goes on and our "mother hen" Wynona the Wyandotte X found eggs a couple of weeks ago that our other daughter "forgot" to collect. Being the great mother that she is, she sat and sat and sat. Today chicks. At lunch time there was a hasty rearrangement of pens to make her a safe place to bring up her little fluffy babies.

It occurs to me that writing is similar. I finished writing Starburst and sent it to the publisher but it was also sad. Over fifteen months of my life were invested in this series and it is done. Dusted. Complete.

How do I feel? Well, there is sadness that it's done but I also feel a lightness. Knowing the series is now complete, I feel I can move onto something new very soon. Like I said, the cycle continues.

Pitching

Well, it isn't exactly a secret. Conference season is now upon us.

American authors are gearing up for the RWA in Anaheim (Gee... how I wish I was going) and the Aussies? Yes, our Gold Coast conference is looming. Even the New Zealanders are in final countdown.

Can't wait. Hanging out at the QT with my writing friends, a behind the scenes tour of Palazzo Versace and then High Tea. Dressing up like a 50's film star and the night of nights. Oh and so much to do!

But an essential part of any writers conference (well apart from the socialising and networking) is the Pitch. My previous experience of pitching has been internet based only, so I'm a little confused and nervous about the face to face action. But then, I reckon most of us will be. (RWA hope you have some scantily clad men ready to take our minds off our nerves...oh did I just say that? Naaaahhhh!)

Like many others, I have asked for a pitch appointment. Scary days ahead while I push through to finish that manuscript (because as anyone would know I've been tied up with my Warriors...)

Never fear though! I am about to go back into Vampire Head Space! Da Da Da Daaaa! (so be afraid. Be very afraid!)

But to prepare myself, not only in having a completed manuscript, I've been looking around the internet for resources which can help me prepare. Or not, as the case may be. Anyway, Fliterary has this fabulous you tube video that I just had to share!

I mean, I know that this isn't best practice, but hey, it is amusing and takes my mind off the level of anxiety I am currently feeling about the whole pitch process.

So today, I am asking what you think are the most important things a first time pitchee needs to know about pitching.

The best response wins a copy of my book Starline!

I'm going to leave this open until Tuesday 24th July. So start sharing those ideas!

Winter/Summer what's the difference?

Man...it's freezing again today. They tell us that the temps are going to start dropping again this week. I knew it was too good to be true. *sigh*

Meanwhile, I am reliably informed, it's sweltering in New York. But right about now, I'd settle for Spring weather. Actually I settle for 10 degrees warmer, even. I can't seem to feel my toes half the time...

But today's blog is more a quick look at the way weather plays a funny part in Australian authors lives vs those living in the UK and USA.

Last month I participated in the Science Fiction Romance Brigades Summer Solstice Blog Hop (which is really funny because I was freezing my patooties off here while putting it together) and I am due to participate in a Summer Scavenger Hunt soon (right smack dab in the middle of winter - frosts and all!) Yes, for us here in Australia it is mid winter. So I'm writing scenes and blogs about summer while wearing my usb warming gloves. Usually while sitting in the warmest winter 'jamas I own, in bed.

5 major differences:

Food:

Salads and Barbeques vs Casseroles, Roasts and Fresh Bread

Clothes:

Bikinis, Shorts and Sarongs vs Jumpers, thermals and bed socks (don't forget the mittens!!)

Drinks:

Ice Cold Tea and Milkshakes vs Hot Chocolate (but the marshmallows help)

Activities:

Swimming & reading beachside vs board games inside & romantic fireside interludes

Shoes:

FlipFlops (Thongs) and sneakers vs Boots and warm slippers

Soo... yes, I will be thinking slightly envious (and warming) thoughts of you all over there, while I quietly turn into an ice block over here...

And to news...

Starburst is finally complete (well, sort of...) It's still horrendously rough, but the bones are there now. Next week... when it's warmer... when the kids go back to school... Nope, I won't be procrastinating here...much :)

But it feels pretty good to be able to say it :) So that episode of my life is closing - there only being one short story to go... and then that universe is complete.
