Here and back again - a writers tale.

Forgive me using the Hobbit title, but it seemed somehow, so appropriate.

Yes!  I am returned from Perth where I had a lovely time.  Caught up with old and new friends.  Ate and Drank lots of excellent Western Australian specialties.  Shopped and checked out the sights. And I edited Starfire.

Let me tell you, at the end of each day, my feet...well in one word...hurt!

I met the fabulous Carolyn Wren - here's the pic.  Now, just excuse the wild hair (mine) as we had just got back from lunch and shopping (I was sooo good cause I didn't buy anything that day!)  That came later.  The credit card is now going Owch! each time I look at it!

Anyway, so I went to Freemantle where I saw Bon Scott's statue:

(Bon Scott was the singer for AC/DC for anyone who doesn't know...that would normally include me too!)

I hung out with good friends:

Oh yes...and we are counting down the days to the release of Starfire (7 days boys and girls) and the biggest news???

Starline is now AVAILABLE IN PRINT!!  Woo Hoo!

So for all you aussies, just hanging out to purchase your copy - it will be on the Love Books Australia website very very soon.  Keep watching that special space at the bottom.  The books are due to arrive around the middle of the month.

And writing?  Well, I haven't really achieved a lot.  I am back to working on The Blood Bride, but I took a break last night.  Instead I decided to watch Farscape.  5 episodes - Back To Back.  How cool is that??  Yeah, Crichton bare chested... Crichton kissing Aeryn...  Uh huh!  Makes it all worthwhile really :D

Oh and we came home to 2 new chicks.  I'll upload pics of them later.  They look so cute in their Brooder Box.  One black (Obviously the English Game influence) and one yellow/white.  She is a wait and see.  But soooo cute!

That's my latest update.  Stay tuned for lots lots more!

Until next time,

Imogene

Villain Interviews with Multi-shifter George Adkins

Today my visitor is George Adkins.  He is the villain of Love and Death in the Big Easy.  Our guest interviewer,  Desmond Simon is the host of Lagniappe, New Orleans’ most popular local talk show. His interviews include both the famous and infamous. This is one of the latter.

Desmond: I’m pleased to have as my very special guest, multi-shifter, George Adkins.
(Applause as a sandy haired man of average height and build in his early thirties tentatively walks on stage assisted by one of the crew. In one hand a white cane clears the space in his path.)

D: Welcome Mister Adkins.

The guest faces the interviewer with sightless eyes behind a double eye patch.

G: Please, call me George.

D: Then, George it is. Tell the audience, George, what is a Multi-shifter?

G: (Prefaces answer with deep breath.) Well, as you know, shape-shifters have only a single animal persona, a bear or large cat–or in the case of our local clan leader, Sufi Drake Martin, a Yorkshire terrier. I’m different in that I can replicate any creature that’s ever lived.

D: Anything, no matter how large or small?’

G: Yes, even animals now extinct. And by the way, the term for my kind is simply multi.

D: Are multis common?

G: No, extremely rare, which works to our advantage. The last one before me hunted in France during the eighteenth century. I had Sufi Martin and the local authorities chasing their tails, no pun intended, until that meddlesome old moose shifter produced a journal the mate of my predecessor kept.

D: A journal?

G: Yes, it documented a multi’s capabilities. And weaknesses. Without that information I’d still be prowling the streets killing at will. At least I exacted revenge on Moose for his betrayal.

D: When did you discover your abilities?

G: As with any other shifter the transformations began in my thirtieth year. I woke up one morning in the shape of a ferret. Quickly I understood I was different when I became a badger on my next morph. After I learned to control the transformations I discovered I could choose the creature, or person I wanted to become.

D: You say you can mimic other people?

G: Oh yes. While out and about, before Sufi Martin spoiled everything, I assumed the form of the spouses of attractive women and provided many passionate encounters. A more serious use of my unique talent involved becoming the people I killed so I could move freely about, unsuspected.

D: I’m told you can even assume female identities.

G: (Grimaces) Yes, but never for afternoon delight. Strictly for business.

D: As I recall you were working for the Department of Homeland Security at the time you discovered your abilities.

G: Correct. The biggest mistake of my life was coming clean with them. In a flash they had me locked away and on heavy tranquilizers. I escaped after killing three of my guards and taking the form of one. Being a native of New Orleans, I headed there, hoping to be of use to Sufi Martin, but as the drugs wore off the urge to kill took over. By the time I arrived, murderous desire supplanted any nobler desires I had to serve the Sufi. (Leans forward, adding in a confidential tone) My therapist thinks my affliction is curable.
(Desmond places a paperback book on the table before them. Camera zooms in.)

D: This is a copy of “Love and Death…” Is that Drake or you on the cover?

George smiles slyly.

G: You know us both. Who do you think it is?

D: I have to admit the image is sufficiently obscured that I can’t tell. Why would the authors choose you over Drake?

G: Maybe because I’m prettier.

D: (Compares cover image with guest) It’s possible, I suppose.

G: Then we’ll have to leave the question a mystery, but be aware the author has a droll sense of humor. He knows I made the story come alive and not Mister and Missus Perfect. How interesting would 200 pages of “Pack-speak” and white magic be without a murderous villain to liven things up? I sure had the old DHS running for cover.

Desmond asides to the studio audience.

D: Do I detect a streak of bitterness?

George growls under his breath.

G: Don’t rile me up, my friend. Remember what I can become.

D: Let’s talk about that. Here is file footage of your rampage through Metairie. What form were you there?

G: Some type of Raptor dinosaur. They’re the best balance between speed, agility, and ferocity.

D: Then you transform in full stride to another creature.

G: Correct, a hawk as I recall. Being able to shift on the run was the key to my invulnerability. It was almost impossible to get a clean shot. And when I was hit, I could usually regenerate.

D: Regeneration? How does that work?

G: Shifters have the ability to regenerate damaged parts as long as the part isn’t severed or destroyed. If that damned Linda Gifford hadn’t been such a good shot…

D: That’s right she shot out your eyes making you permanently blind.

George ruefully touches the double eye patch.

G: If only a sliver of eye had remained…

D: In that event, Sufi Martin would’ve had you executed. After all you were under a condemnata.

G: But for his soft hearted wife Kady he would’ve anyway. After drilling out my eyes the crew took me downstairs for final decapitation. She interceded.

D: She’s up for election to Congress. Are you supporting her?

Grins

G: Convicted felons can’t vote. You know that.

Desmond consults notes.

D: So why kill?

G: I’m insane remember? That’s the side effect of being a multi. Once I gave my Homeland Security jailers the slip it was off to the races.

D: Why cheerleaders?’

G: They’re one of the most protected and coveted segments of society. The terror they experience when they realize the last of the many safeguards is stripped away is the greatest rush I’ve ever felt. Watching the life drain from them can’t be beat, but now given my condition all that’s gone. For now.

D: What do you mean, by for now? Do you have something to share?

G: Even if Drake doesn’t, Mike and Cynthia have a soft spot for me. Homeland Security has me back in custody. They were foolish enough to approve a furlough for this interview, weren’t they? Rumor has it they’ve cooked something up for the President’s visit this coming Mardi Gras season. Perhaps I can reach an accommodation with my employer. They need the help. DHS is an organization with aspirations greater than their abilities.

D: I can’t wait to see how that turns out. Any last words for the audience?

G: Yes, don’t count this boy out yet. The next plague germ you inhale might be me.

Wow...err...thanks Desmond for that insightful interview with George Adkins.  Thanks to Lagniappe for the transcript of the interview.  Stay tuned for more insightful interviews.

The Forbidden Claim by Kelly Gendron (+ Giveaway!)

I don’t mind a good Romantic Suspense, so I put my hand up to review this title, little did I know I was going to find a seriously sexy title landing in my inbox!

US Marshall Jinx Collins is an outspoken, free-spirited, and fearless woman. It’s that same fearlessness, however, that tends to get her into trouble. Jinx has lots of questions about her life including the man who could be her the key to her past.

Jed Kane has worked undercover in the human trafficking ring for years. When Jed accepts a job to disguise himself as one of his worst enemies and take a ride from the correctional facility to a secured location, he certainly had not planned on being abducted by Jinx Collins.

There was nothing about the relationship that did not immediately explode into life.  From the first encounter of Jinx and Jed we were left in no doubt that this couple would be ending up together by the end of the book.  The interludes are regular and very very hot.  So make sure you wear oven mits when reading the intimate scenes!

There was a range of themes contained throughout the story, including assumed identities, abducted children, reunited sibling, well you get the idea, anyway.  I did think the suspense came very secondary to the character/couple development throughout the book, which is a shame, because I do think it would have strengthened the tale a little and by the end I was a little let down that it really felt almost unfinished.  I ended up asking myself if there will be a follow on book?

Verdict:  At the end of the day, it is an erotic tale that should leave you warmed on the inside.  I would suggest it for those looking for a weekend or holiday read with the added benefit of a little naughty pleasure.

BLURB

US Marshall Jinx Collins is an outspoken, free-spirited, and fearless woman. It's that same fearlessness, however, that tends to get her into trouble. Jinx questions her life prior to being adopted. When those questions lead her to a murderer who's about to be transported into the witness protection program, Jinx decides to kidnap him to see if she can uncover the truth.

Jed Kane has worked undercover in the human trafficking ring for years. When Jed accepts a job to disguise himself as one of his worst enemies and to take a ride from the correctional facility to a secured location, he certainly had not planned on being abducted by Jinx Collins. Jed's uncertain as to how he feels about her touchy-feely hands and loose lips-unsure if they irritate him or if they are awakening his badly behaving desires. Jed knows he must first find out what the fanatical little lady wants with a murderer before he can act on whatever he's feeling.

Straight away Jinx is attracted to the resilient and enticing Jed Kane-the only man who hasn't backed down from her candor. While Jinx discovers that the questionable criminal may be able to assist her in finding out the truth about her past, Jed vows to save Jinx from her daring self. Once Jinx starts to understand what Jed feels for her-he wants to own her-she demands that he succumb to the raging frenzy. Jed allows himself to seduce her body, submitting himself to that dominant need. But haunted by a world of unlawful ownership, Jed forbids his cold heart to stake its dangerous claim on Jinx Collins.

Locked away in a dark basement, a little boy is waiting to be rescued-and Jinx's past holds the key to his prison. If Jinx can finally find the truth which holds her fears, and if Jed can forgive himself for his past, then not only might they be able to save the boy, but they might also discover that their carnal desires really derive from their own prison... an inescapable prison of love.

EXCERPT

Instinct told him to remove his hands from her hot little body. But Jed stood motionless. He needed to let go-and should have-but as her smile dissolved, he became lost to the kittenish gleam in her canted eyes. She feathered her fingertips lightly over his chest and Jed stiffened.

"Well," she lifted a hand and slipped it around to the back of his neck, "I'm patiently waiting for that other shock... the one you personally were going to give to me if I tried to escape." She scrapped her nails along his neck. A rush of goose-bumps rippled right down to Jed's toes.

He glared at her. Anger surged through him from her foolish but bold act, and from his reaction to it. He wanted to grab her and shake her. Although he may not be Aztec, Jed certainly was a killer, and this Jinx was too daring for her own damn good. He wanted to teach her a lesson and give her another well-deserved scare. He snatched her hands and slammed her into the wall. "Don't try to seduce me. There's no way I'm letting you go," he warned.

"Seduce you?" She tossed back her head and giggled as if it was the most ridiculous thing she'd ever heard. "Jed," she sobered, but the fearless minx didn't shrink back from him, instead, she pressed her body up against his, "don't mistake my curiosity for seduction."

Jed pinned her hands to the wall. If closeness was what she wanted, then he'd give it to her. He thrust his body forward, hitting his pelvis, hips, and his growing erection into her soft form. She tensed beneath his firm hold, and his action was rewarded by the flicker of fear he caught in her eyes.

"Don't' mistake this GQ guy," he pushed her hands harder to the wall, "for a man who wouldn't hurt you to get what he wants."

Trepidation slipped from her. "And what exactly is it that you want, Jed?" She glimpsed down at their molded bodies, drawing attention to his hard male heat, and then glanced back up at him.

Fuck! Jed could feel his self-control slipping. He needed to back away. Discerning his insubordinate rod was almost ready to surrender to her sexual advances, ready to take what she was offering in return for her freedom.

"Right now, what I want," his mouth was so close, nearly brushing hers, "you couldn't handle it."

"Try me," she purred, her warm breath feathering upon his lips.

Damn! She made him hard. He inched closer to her tempt. Her small firm breasts pressed into his chest and her breaths quickened as he rounded to her ear. "I think I'll wait until you tell me just who you are," he lowered his already rasping voice, "before I satisfy your curiosity and play with you, little lady." He drew back, determining if he didn't retreat, the disloyal throbbing hardness between his legs would stop at nothing to get what it wanted- her. And with that knowledge, Jed did what he should've done when she fell into his body- he let her go. Seeing the flash of relief in her eyes reassured Jed that he'd made the right decision. It appeared, for all the purring the kitty was doing, her nails weren't actually ready to give him a scratch, yet.

Jed went over to the window to close it. While latching the window, he caught her reflection in the mirror. She was going after his gun. "Don't even try it," he advised the little lady, who apparently hadn't learned not to touch something when it was hot.

She grimaced. Her head turned, and she met his reflection. "Wouldn't think of it," she smirked and crossed her arms over her heaving breasts...

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Kelly has been faithfully writing for three years but did write her first book ten years ago. She put it down to raise her son as a single mom and then picked it back up when she and her son finally grew up. That's when she settled into her adult life and started to seriously write again. She's dabbled with paranormal stories, but recently she's been on a Romantic Suspense kick. The recipe for the men in her stories: dark and mysterious, strong and confident and, of course, besides magnificent bodies, and shameless aptitudes, they must have a heart you want to rip out of the pages (or your e-Reader) and take to bed with you at night.

More Cover Art :)

Yes, I've been very very good, hiding away in my office working.  In fact, I have been so good, I haven't yet shared my latest cover art for Star of the Fleet...

So here I am editing Starfire, worrying about edits of Star of the Fleet, and the fabulous Dawne Dominique hits me with this fabulous cover.  What can I say?

It is TOTALLY awesome!

Ah yes and to go with it is the updated Banner as well.  Watch out - this will be showing up in other places soon, too!

Apart from that, Blame the Wine is now being read over and I am working on 2 projects at once - The Blood Bride is finally back onto the screen and being edited (after discovering I lost the last 20 000 words somewhere...) and Beating Death (still on the working title there.)

I am looking forward to my break in Perth in about a week.  So I will only be putting up the odd post, here and there for the next little while.  On a really bright note, though, I will be catching up with the super fabulous Carolyn Wren (you are going to be hearing a whole heap more about her in the months to come!) who just happens to be my Critique Partner and also finalist in BOTH the Romance Writers of Australia Emerald competition (Category Title) AND the Daphne Du Maurier for Excellence in Mystery & Suspense writing.

An interview with... Amanda J Greene

Good morning Amanda.  Thanks for joining me on my blog.

Thank you for having me here today.

Can you tell me a little about the non-writing parts of your life?

Well, I live in Southern California with husband and our super cute cocker spaniel (she is my writing partner, always at my side or sitting on my feet). I’m currently working on my B.A. in history and attend school full time. When I’m not busy typing away and working on my next book, I’m spending time with my wonderful, loud, Italian family.

Vampires.  You seem to love them.  Why?

My love affair with vampires began when I was about twelve or thirteen. I read my first vampire novel, Companions of the Night by Vivian Vande Velde. I fell in love with the leading man, Ethan. I think I love vampires so much because I find alpha’s sexy and I have a thing for the bad boys.

If you had to think of one defining moment in your life, that brought you to writing, what would that be?

I began writing for fun when I was in middle school. I would type up chapters and hand them out to my friends. I can’t say if there was a defining moment that brought me to writing. However, there was a defining moment (more like a defining period of time) that made me decide to become an indie author. I had tried numerous times to find a publisher or an agent. When I was 21, about two years ago, my grandfather passed away and my husband was in Iraq. It was a hard time for my family and me; we were all very close to my papa. When anyone passes it can get you thinking about how short life is and that if you have a dream you must make it happen. I knew I wanted to be a writer, I knew I had some great stories to share. So, I did some research and…here I am.  Working on publishing and promoting my first book, Caressed by Moonlight (Rulers of Darkness #1), helped take my mind off of everything that was going on. It gave me something to focus on while my husband was deployed.

Tea, Coffee, Chocolate or something a little stronger?

HUGE coffee fan! I can drink it any time of the day.

5 books on a desert island - what would you choose?

Flame and the Flower by  Kathleen Woodiwiss
Fires of Winter by Johanna Lindsey
Lover Avenged by J.R. Ward
Companions of Night by Vivian Vande Velde
Dark Needs at Night’s Edge by Kresley Cole

What would you call your guilty pleasure?

Cheesecake! I love it.

Tell us something no one would guess about you.

Let’s see…I’m about 5’5” and no one would ever guess that I used to play basketball and kicked butt.

Do you have a few words of advice for aspiring writings, reading this blog?
Why did you decide to self publish and would you recommend it to others as a first choice and why?

Going the indie author route is tough. When I started, I had no idea what I was doing. I didn’t know how to get my books review or who to design my cover, etc. I figured everything out along the way and I’ve shocked at how well my Rulers of Darkness series is doing. I never expected to have such success, at least not right away. I’m slowly yet steadily building a fan base and getting my name “out there”.
I decided to self-publish because I felt I my book, Caressed by Moonlight (Rulers of Darkness #1) was solid romance. I wanted to share my work the world and help bring people the feeling I get whenever I read a fantastic book.
I would recommend self-publishing. It takes a lot of work: writing, editing, marketing, promotions, etc. If you are well organized and a confident person then go for it. With the resources and networking systems we have today, there is nothing to hold you back. I’m proud to be an independent author.

BLURB

Dimitri Arsov, the last remaining pure vampire, was thought to be dead for the past four hundreds years. Now, he is back and has a score to settle with the traitor that had tried to kill him centuries ago. But as he waits for his prey to blindly step into his carefully laid trap, his overwhelming hunger for blood is triggered when he saves a beautiful art historian.

Kerstyn Ingmar’s life was normal and straight up boring until the night she is rescued by the dangerously sexy, powerfully mesmerizing, Dimitri. Unable to resist his diamond blue eyes and intense kisses, she is drawn into his world of darkness and closer to her impending doom.

While their desire consumes them, Dimitri is haunted by images of a bloody and deadly future. As his enemies draw near, he must find a way to save his mate from her destiny before fate destroys them both.

EXCERPT #1

“You’ve healed,” she whispered. Her voice was rough and her throat ached from her screams. “Your wounds are gone. That…that is impossible.”

“Not for me,” he grated.

Her eyes narrowed. “What are you?”

He dropped his head. Why now? Why did it have to happen this way? He cursed, damning Fate for the tricks she played. He hadn’t wanted it to happen this way. He wanted them to take their time, to get to know one another before he shared his secret with her. Now he was cornered. He had to tell her or―no. He would not erase her memory; he could not disrespect her that way. He would not take the coward’s way out.

He had to tell her.

His heart clenched. What if she rejected him? What if she hated him? What if he repulsed her? She was his mate, but that was no guarantee that she would understand, that she would stay with him or that she would love him.

“What are you?” she demanded again, her voice shaking.

Her thoughts screamed at him. Vampire. Vampire. Vampire! He forced his gift aside, shoving it back into the darkness of his mind.

“I think you already know,” he said before pulling his shirt closed.
