A Cat's Tale by Melissa Snark

Josephine Young is a petite Asian woman in her early twenties with delicate bone structure and startling blue eyes. She possesses cat-like grace and is capable of staring without blinking for extended periods of time. Although she appears fully human, one still receives the distinct impression that her tail is twitching.

Interviewer: Ms. Young, welcome to the Daily Show.

Josephine (smiles): Hello! And thank you. Please, my name is Josephine. My friends call me Josie. I'd like to thank my host for having me as a guest today.

Interviewer: I understand that you're the heroine of A Cat's Tale? Please tell us a little bit more about yourself.

Josephine:  Well, I'm a pure bred seal point Siamese. I'm also a shapechanger. I was  born in Florida and used to live with a little old lady from Pensacola before a vampire catnapped me.

Interviewer: Goodness that sounds terrible. Was it traumatic?

Josephine:  Oh, absolutely! That leech held me captive for three years as a blood pet. I suffered an awful amount of torment.

Interviewer: But you're free now.

Josephine:  Well, the vamp met with a dusty fate so I'm on my own for the first time in my life.  Independence is a little bit scary but I'm enjoying it.

Interviewer: That's wonderful. Now, let's take a moment and talk about your story—A CAT'S TALE. I understand that the hero isn't exactly the same... Erm, what's the best way to put this?

Josephine:  Creature?

Interviewer: Yes, that's it!

Josephine (sniffs): Jared is a werewolf.

Interviewer: So yours is a cross-species romance?

Josephine: I suppose you could say that.

Interviewer: How did you and Jared meet?

Josephine: In a bar. He was very attracted to me—naturally. At the time, I thought he was sorta cute but nothing to write home about. Anyway, I slipped a horse tranquilizer into his drink and abducted him.

Interviewer:  Good grief!

Josephine (innocent look): What?

Interview: You must be kidding?

Josephine (blank stare)

Interviewer: I can see you're not kidding. Well, Jared must have been upset.

Josephine (grins): Yes, he was furious.

Interviewer: So, when you fight—it's like cats and dogs?

Josephine (huffs in obvious irritation): Look, I understand where you're going with this but I'm not interested in labels. Jared and I may not be a conventional couple, but that doesn't mean we should be treated like a spectacle.

Interviewer (clears throat): Let's try a less inflammatory topic. Josie, what is that you enjoy doing in your free time.

Josephine: I enjoy all the things other girls do: endless hours grooming, long naps in the sun, a little bit of nip now and then.

Interviewer: Uh, yes. I can see how that makes you just like other girls. Tell me, do you embrace your uniqueness, or have you always just wanted to fit in?

Josephine (brow lifts): Fit into what? I'm extremely limber. I can squeeze my body through any opening my head fits through, and as a cat, I'm not very large. So sure, I guess you could say that I can fit into almost anything… I'm very talented at getting into trouble too or so Jared says.

Interviewer:  Uh, so you're just a conventional cat-girl.

Josephine: Exactly!

Interviewer:  Is Jared as unconventional as you?

Josephine:  My man is a werewolf, but he's not all that different from other wolves, at least not that I've noticed. I wouldn't call him unconventional. Snarky and something of a smart ass, maybe…  Jared is also a firefighter which resulted in unfortunate and really bad jokes when we first met. I won't go into details, but I'm sure you can imagine.

Interviewer: Yes, I can imagine. Unfortunately, our time is running out. Josie, do you have anything else you'd like to share with our readers. Any dark secrets

Josephine (unblinking):  I can't tell you or I'd have to kill you.

Interviewer: I can't tell if you're kidding. That's really disturbing. Er, one last question.  If you could do anything without concern for consequences, what would it be?

Josephine (smirks):  Give a werewolf a hot foot.

Interviewer: And that's all the time we have today! Everyone, please give Josephine Young a hand!

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Alpha werewolf, Jared Kohl, wakes up in a vampire’s dungeon, swearing revenge upon the wily Siamese werecat who lured him there with her sultry lips and the sweetest tail. To escape his undead captor, all he has to do is seduce the skittish puss and show her that trust is often a hot and hard lesson to learn.

Enslaved feline shifter, Josephine Young, has learned the hard way not to believe in anything or anyone—not men, not love, and certainly not the blood-sucking mistress who tossed her into the cage with the hungry beast she’d betrayed. But Josephine does what she must to survive, including tempting the dominant werewolf to give her more than promises.

Imprisoned for their blood, Jared and Josephine fight for survival and discover a passion that neither can walk away from. Can these two predators survive long enough to prove that cats and dogs can be more than enemies?

“Ooph.” Jared’s breath expelled from his lungs with the sudden addition of Josephine atop his chest. The cot creaked under the strain of their combined weight.

The curious blue-eyed cat shoved her head between the werewolf and his book. He had been ignoring her for hours to read. It was unacceptable. “Whatcha doing?”
“Plotting to take over the world. What the hell does it look like I’m doing?” He closed his book.

“Don’t be surly.” She stuck the pad of her palm against his chin and brushed his lips with her knuckles. “No one likes a grumpy werewolf.”

“Funny, I don’t recall ever worrying about my popularity.”

“You should.” Josephine watched as he set the book aside. “Does Shakespeare say anything about cats?”

Beneath her, Jared contemplated in silence, his chest rising and falling with comfortable regularity. “In Othello, he says, ‘Drown thyself? Drown cats and blind puppies.’”

“Ouch! Hey, no claws!” Jared jumped as Josephine’s claws dug into his bare chest; he grabbed her and lifted her. His laughter echoed through the small cell.
“Something more flattering.”

“Henry IV: ‘I am as vigilant as a cat to steal cream.’” He lowered her to rest upon his chest again.

Hypnotized by Lacey Wolf

Paisley
I’m discovering who I am in this world. Venturing out on my own, away from my parents, and finding out what life is really all about. College isn’t as easy as I thought it would be, especially with my best friend Evan becoming someone I hardly recognize.
But then I met Gabe. He changed everything. My life will never be the same.
Gabe
I lived my life day to day, waiting for something great to happen.
Then she walked into the coffee house, with her long legs and killer smile. I had to know her. Nothing was going to stop me. She hypnotized me from the moment I laid eyes on her.
And after the first kiss, my fate was sealed to Paisley.
Content Warning: This book is recommended for ages 17 and up. Adult situations, including sex, underage drinking, and drugs will be found within these pages.
~Excerpt~
Kristy and I found ourselves a corner. I sipped a little more of my beer, finally getting the bottle a little more than halfway gone. Nursing the drink probably wasn’t the best idea, but as long as I kept this in my hand, I didn’t feel like such a loser. Maybe my friends were right. It was time to quit taking the easy route. I needed to have fun.
“Who is that hot guy? I think he’s checking you out.” Kristy poked my side.
I followed her gaze. Gabe.
“Go talk to him.” She pushed me.
 “I, uh, I already did.”
Her eyes lit up. “Seriously? Well, who is he?”
I shrugged. “I met him before work at a coffee shop. He stared at me the whole time. Then tonight, when he got here, he watched me like he is now.” I should feel self conscious, but I didn’t. “As I waited for you, he came and talked to me, but Evan chased him away. To be honest, he’s freaking me out a little.” Kind of, but he intrigued me so much more.
“He can’t keep his eyes off of you.”
She was right. Even as he spoke to the guy with him, his eyes never left me. My heart raced. I honestly didn’t know what to think. It wasn’t like I’d never dated before. I’d had a few boyfriends in high school, but nothing serious.
“Go talk to him,” Kristy pressed.
“Who?” Evan showed up at just the right time. Go figure.
 “No one,” I said quickly.
“She’s being silly. That guy.” Kristy pointed. Great, now he knew we were talking about him.
“She needs to stay away from him.” Evan put his arm around me again, only now he put a little more weight against me. If I didn’t think he’d fall, I’d have moved.
Kristy stared at Evan’s arm a moment then asked, “Why? He’s hot.”
“I don’t know. But my roommate says he’s trouble.”
Of course he was. He parked his bike wherever he wanted. “I need to use the restroom. Hold my drink.” I handed it to Kristy.
I wandered around the house. It was two stories, surely they had a restroom down here, but I didn’t find one. I headed up the creaky stairs. Sounds of groaning welcomed me at the top, making me giggle. Some people were having a lot of fun.
After using the restroom, I checked my appearance in the mirror. I turned by head back and forth. Maybe I did need to let my hair down. Tugging the elastic out, I let my long locks fall over my shoulder. I fluffed it with my fingers. The crease wasn’t so bad, and besides, more than half the people here were drunk. They weren’t going to care how my hair appeared.
I left the bathroom and stopped in my tracks. Leaning against the opposite wall was Gabe.
“Uh, hey again.” I grinned awkwardly.
 “Having a good time?”
 “I guess.”
A girl walked up wobbly, holding the wall the whole way. She pushed me out of the way, slamming the bathroom door. Now I stood close to him. Near enough I could touch him if I wanted.
“You sure that guy isn’t your boyfriend?”
 I nodded. “Positive.”
“He comes across like he is.” His blue eyes bore in to mine.
“Well, he isn’t. Why would I lie?”
 He shrugged. “Walk with me.”
I glanced around. We were upstairs, and there wasn’t anywhere to go. I knew once I went down stairs and Evan saw, he’d stop us. “It’s not a good idea.”
 “Why?”
I leaned closer to him, inhaling his intoxicating scent and said, “From what I hear, I should stay away from you.”
He chuckled. “Is that so? And what do you think?”
I think I should see where he wants to take me, but I didn’t say that. “I don’t know you.”
“Then get to know me. Come on. One little walk. What could go wrong?”
The bathroom door opened and the drunk girl reemerged. “Awesome party!”
I laughed and watched as she concentrated on walking. Poor girl. I hoped she made it down the stairs.
“So?” He raised an eyebrow.
It was tempting. Take a walk with him, talk, get to know him, and find out why everyone thought he was trouble. “I think I’m going to pass.”
The cutest smirk I’d ever seen appeared on his face. “Paisley, you’re really going to make me work, aren’t you?”
The sound of my name on his lips was like music. “How did you know my name?” That was stupid, he could’ve asked someone.
“From the coffee shop when you got a drink.”
 “Oh, yeah.”
He reached out and brushed a lock of hair from my face. My breath caught when his fingers lightly touched my skin, and I swear every nerve was on end.
“I like a good challenge.” He walked away, leaving me standing there, speechless.
