A Sapphire For Karina

Excerpt:

The woman at the end of the bar looked dejected, he mused, wiping out the glass one last time.

He sighed. It was Christmas Eve, and here he was working in an early empty bar. Everyone else had gone home to families…everyone except him and the woman propping up the end of the bar. He sauntered up the small galley area toward her.

“Hey, you okay?”

She lifted her head and he caught a flash of dampness in her green eyes.

“Yeah.” The word was husky as she bobbed her straw up and down in her empty glass.
“Can I get another?”

He eyed the glass with a frown. He was sure it must be the fourth or fifth since she’d come in, though she was still handling herself quite well.

“You know, my license terms state that I have to find out if you’re intoxicated before I serve you any more alcohol. So before I start checking, how about you share your name?”

She smiled slightly and he grinned back. His world tilted on its axis. She was gorgeous when she smiled.
“Karina. My name is Karina.”

She held out a hand and he grabbed it. The ringless fingers caught his eye. Such a beautiful woman to be alone and unattached on Christmas Eve.

“Well, Karina, as you seem to still be reasonably sober, I’ll do you a favour. Grab a soft drink and once you’re done, I’ll get you a complimentary drink.” He waited, tensely. Would she get angry or just accept the drink?

“Won’t your boss get upset with you giving away free drinks?” She cocked her head to one side, and he barked out a laugh.

“Nah, only the boss can sack me. And I wouldn’t do that to myself. By the way, my name is Grant.” He winked in an exaggerated fashion. It was almost a leer, and he’d perfected it behind this bar for just these occasions.

She laughed a little and he watched as it lifted the sadness from her features. She went from merely pretty to show-stoppingly gorgeous in an instant and he felt himself being drawn to her.

“So, how about you tell me why a beautiful young thing like yourself, is alone on Christmas Eve and in my bar?” She jerked back and he nearly cursed out loud at his own ham-handed tactics. “Sorry, I just meant sometimes it’s good to share your problems.”

“I don’t—”

He cut short her denial. “Come on. We’ll probably never meet again and I have the feeling you need to share.” Quickly, he scanned the empty bar before lifting the small wooden flap. Then he carried two sodas to her side. He settled on a padded stool.

“There’s no one else here, and I’m a good listener.”

For a second, he could see her wavering. Then she nodded.

“Yeah, maybe that is what I need.” She inhaled deeply while he waited silently. “See, I was living with this guy. Barry. I thought he was my best friend and the love of my life. Well, it turns out he was two timing me. With my sister.”

“Ouch.” He couldn’t help the word slipping past his lips.

She nodded. “Yeah. I didn’t know until I got a transfer up here. That was four weeks ago. So here I am, Christmas Eve and all alone.” She indicated to the bar. “Just like you.”

He nodded. It was true. He was alone.
